Announcements for Tuesday, September 27

General School Announcements

  • Students in grades 7-11 who missed yearbook pics (September 7) will have make-up pictures taken on October 3.  Seniors, if you missed your pics this summer, your make-up pics will be taken on October 3; check your assigned time on the schedule in Mrs. Cox's room.  Also, seniors who are unhappy with how their pics from summer turned out may have theirs redone on October 3.  Sign up in Mrs. Cox's room.
  • On Wednesday, October 5, all 12th graders will take the ACT WorkKeys and 10th graders will take the pre-ACT.  Due to staffing and room assignment challenges, 9th and 11th graders will have a virtual learning day.  7th and 8th graders will be at school like normal.
  • Students will be out of school from Friday, October 7, through Tuesday, October 11.  Friday is a work day for teachers, and Fall Break is Monday - Tuesday. 
  • Students and parents, please keep a check on grades and absences in your PowerSchool portal.
  • The 1st 9 week grading period ends on Friday, October 14.  Report cards will be issued on Friday, October 21.
  • Reminder for all students: There is only a 3-day period for turning in excuses after you are absent. Please get your excuses turned in ASAP.

Announcements Related to LCHS Athletic and Extracurricular Events:

  • Football (V) plays at Phil Campbell on Friday, September 30; hosts Mars Hill on Friday, October 14; plays at Colbert Heights on Friday, October 21; hosts Brooks on *Thursday, October 27*.  The first round of playoffs will be Friday, November 4.
  • Volleyball (V) plays at Addison on Thursday, September 29, beginning at 4:30 PM.  Volleyball (V) will play in the County Tournament at Brooks on Saturday, October 1; the finals for the County Tournament will be Monday, October 3, at 6:00 PM.  Volleyball (V) hosts a trimatch with Wilson and Rogers on Tuesday, October 4, starting at 4:30 PM.  Volleyball (V) plays at East Limestone on Thursday, October 6, starting at 5:00 PM.  Volleyball (V) plays in a tournament at Athens High School on Saturday, October 8.  Volleyball (V) ends the regular season at Central on Monday, October 10, beginning at 5:00 PM.  The volleyball area tournament is TBD, either October 12 or October 14.
  • Cross country will run in the Jesse Owens Classic at Oakville on Saturday, October 1.  Cross country will run in the Randolph Invitational at John Hunt Running Park on Saturday, October 15.  Cross country will run in the Northwest Alabama Championships at Oakville on Thursday, October 20.  Cross country will run in section competition on Thursday, October 27.
  • Football (JrH) playoffs begin on Monday, October 3, at Brooks.  Football (JrH) playoffs continue on Monday, October 10, at Central.  The championship game for JrH football will be on Monday, October 17, at LCHS.
  • Students interested in forming a fishing team should sign a sheet in the office.

Announcements Related to School Clubs, Events, Activities, and Opportunities

  • Students interested in joining the Drama Club should pay club dues to Mrs. Cox.  Drama Club dues are $5.
  • Spanish Club t-shirts are now on sale.  The shirts are $16. Please see Mrs. Clemmons for an order form. Deadline to order is Oct. 3.
  • Any junior wanting to take the PSAT needs to contact Mrs. Brown as soon as possible.  The test will be given on Monday, October 25, at the county office.  The cost is $18.
  • Junior High Scholar Bowl tryouts will be tomorrow at 3 PM in the library. If you cannot make this time and would like to try out, please see Mrs. Nunley or Mrs. Howdyshell.

Announcements Related to School Fees and Orders

  • All students may eat breakfast for free again this school year!
  • The program allowing all students to eat free lunch is expiring.  Our school asks that all families fill out the application at www.myschoolapps.com to see if you qualify for the free or reduced federal lunch program.  This program (Title I) provides financial assistance to our school if we meet a certain percentage of students who qualify.
  • Jostens will be on campus to speak to our seniors about graduation order information on Tuesday, September 27.  This meeting will start at 1:45 pm in the library.

Announcements Related to Local Programs, Opportunities, Competitions, and Activities

  • The next ACT will be given on our campus on Saturday, October 22.  Set an alarm if you registered!

Announcements Related to College Admissions and Information Sessions

  • Students, especially seniors, should check their school email accounts daily to make sure they get all scholarship information.
  • There will be a meeting for 12th grade students and their parents on Tuesday, September 27, at 6:00 PM in the library.
  • The College of Engineering at the University of Alabama is hosting E-Day on Friday, October 28, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. If you are interested, register at eng.ua.edu/e-day by October 14, 2022.
  • Jacksonville State University Fall Preview Days are October 1 and November 12, 2022.  You will be able to create your own schedule with options to take a tour, explore academic programs and more.  Go to jsu.edu for more information.
  • Huntingdon College Preview Days are Saturday, September 29, 2022, and Monday, February 20, 2023.  You are invited to schedule a personal visit any weekday.  Go to www.huntingdon.edu/visit to do so. 

 Announcements Related to Scholarships

  • The Heisman High School Scholarship is now open for applications.  If you are a senior with a 3.0 GPA or better, have participated in sports in 9, 10, and 11th grade and are a leader in your school, you may qualify.  See Mrs. Morgan if you are interested.  The deadline to apply is October 18, 2022.
  • Students, especially seniors, should check their school email accounts daily to make sure they get all scholarship information.
  • Other scholarship information is available on the guidance department webpage.  Go to www.lcschools.org/lchs and select Resources -> Guidance and Counseling.
  • The application for the Coca-Cola Scholars Program is now open through October 31, 2022,  Learn more about this 20,000.00 scholarship by visiting https://www.coca-colascholarsfoundation.org/apply/.
  • The application for the Elks National Scholarship Program is now open.  Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.  Eligibility: 
    • Current high school seniors, or the equivalent, who are citizens of the United States are eligible to apply.

    • Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.

    • High school graduates are not eligible to apply.

    • Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are submitted; permanent legal resident status does not qualify.

    The application deadline is November 14, 2022 at 11:59 pm Pacific time.

  • The Patriotic Citizenship Award/Scholarship (1st-$700, 2nd- $200 and 3rd- $100) is now available for applications. This scholarship consists of a test on the US Constitution, as well as a 1500 word essay which will be completed prior to the test.  The deadline for student sign up is September 30.  If you are interested, see Mrs. Reding.
