Mary Nolte, the music teacher at Brooks Elementary and Waterloo School, is a recipient of the latest Alabama Arts Education Initiative Grant, bringing an additional $10,000 into Lauderdale County schools and music education.
"We are so thankful to have received this grant," said Mrs. Nolte, standing in her classroom filled with eager students. "To have received the grant again means that we can purchase more instruments and provide more opportunities for all our students."
Planned when high school students are back in class in person, Mrs. Nolte hopes to build a recording studio space so that students will have an opportunity to record their work and build musical portfolios.
Mrs. Nolte teaches at Brooks Elem four days a week and is at Waterloo one day each week. She and art teacher, Dusty Farris, team to widen student experiences in performing and visual arts.
According to State Superintendent, Dr. Eric Mackey, the grant goals include, "Provide and increase access and equity to quality arts education to facilitate artistic literacy."
The grant is a partnership between the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama State Council on the Arts, as well as other state art programs.
