Title I is a federal education program providing supplemental funds to schools and districts. The funds are set aside for parent and family involvement, student learning helps, and more.

Parents have a right to know what is available and provided through Parents Right to Know in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

• Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. Among other things, the dollars are used to:
  • Identify students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these students meet the State’s challenging content standards.
  • Hire additional teachers and staff
  • Purchase supplemental programs, materials, and supplies
  • Conduct parent and family engagement meetings, training, and activities 

For Title I funding, the federal government provides money to each state. In our state, the Alabama State Department of Education receives the allocated funds and sends this money to school districts. The amount of money allocated for each school is determined based on the number of low-income students who qualify for free and reduced lunches

For 2025-2026, the federal government has determined that eight schools in Lauderdale County will be designated as school-wide Title I schools. They are:

• Brooks Elementary
• Brooks High School
• Central Elementary School
• Central High School
• Lauderdale County Elementary School
• Lauderdale County High School
• Lexington Elementary School
• Lexington High School
• Rogers Elementary School
• Rogers High School
• Underwood Elementary
• Waterloo School
• Wilson Elementary School
• Wilson High School 

Title I programs serve children in elementary and secondary schools who have demonstrated that extra assistance is needed. The determination by the federal government is based on a school's low-income free and reduced lunch applications.

The range of services offered by Title I schools is determined by the federal government. There are approved designated categories of services, programs, and activities for which the Title I can be spent.

Title I programs generally offer the following:

• Additional teachers and/or teachers’ aides
• Extra time for teaching students the skills they need
• Additional teaching and learning materials which supplement students' regular instruction
• Professional development for teachers
• Parental involvement activities and materials  

Parents, you can significantly influence the success of your child(ren) in school. By becoming an active participant in parental involvement at your school, you will:

• Serve as a role model- showing your child you support his/her education.
• Keep apprised of your child's educational progress, demonstrating how important that progress is to you.
• Teach your child that your input at the school is appreciated and that you support your school's efforts.
